1999 Pokémon Base Set Guide: 1st Edition, Shadowless, and Unlimited

The 1999 Pokémon Base Set is the foundation of the entire Pokémon TCG hobby. Every collector eventually wants to own at least one Base Set holo. Understanding the print variants — 1st Edition, Shadowless, Unlimited — is essential to knowing what your card is actually worth.

The three print variants

In order of printing (and rarity):

1st Edition

The first print run of Base Set, released in January 1999 in limited quantity. Identified by the "1st Edition" stamp on the lower left of the card art (left of the Pokémon's image).

• Smallest print run.
• Highest value.
• Most counterfeited.

Shadowless

The second print run, released after 1st Edition supply ran out. No 1st Edition stamp, and the Pokémon image has no drop-shadow under it (the image looks "flatter" against the yellow border).

• Mid-tier rarity.
• Strong value, often overlooked by casual collectors.

Unlimited

The third and ongoing print run for the original release period. Like Shadowless, no 1st Edition stamp, but with the drop-shadow under the Pokémon image.

• Largest print run.
• Most accessible.
• Still strong value for top cards (Charizard, etc.).

How to spot the difference

Three quick visual checks:

1. Look for the "1st Edition" stamp. Present = 1st Edition.
2. Look for a drop-shadow under the Pokémon image. Present = Unlimited; Absent = Shadowless or 1st Edition.
3. Look at the back hue. Some 1st Edition Base Set cards have slightly different back coloring than later prints (subtle but real).

The chase cards

Charizard #4

The single most valuable Base Set card.

• PSA 10 1st Edition: $400,000+ at peak
• PSA 10 Shadowless: $30,000+
• PSA 10 Unlimited: $10,000–$20,000

Blastoise #2 and Venusaur #15

The other starter holos. Strong premiums but trail Charizard significantly.

Other Base Set holos

Alakazam, Chansey, Clefairy, Gyarados, Hitmonchan, Machamp, Magneton, Mewtwo, Nidoking, Ninetales, Poliwrath, Raichu, Zapdos. All carry premiums in PSA 10 with significant 1st Edition / Shadowless / Unlimited stratification.

Centering on Base Set is brutal

Base Set was printed with centering tolerances that would horrify modern collectors. PSA 10 hit rates on Base Set holos are extremely low. This is why the price spread between PSA 9 and PSA 10 is so large — the 10s are effectively miracle cards.

Authentication is critical

The 1st Edition Charizard is one of the most counterfeited cards in the world. Modern fakes are sophisticated. Always:

• Buy slabbed for high-value purchases.
• Verify cert numbers on PSA's database.
• Use UV light to check holographic patterns.
• Compare to known-good reference cards.

For raw cards, scan with AI to flag obvious print and structural issues before purchasing.

Grading priorities

PSA dominates Base Set grading by a massive margin. CGC has presence and a beautiful slab for Pokémon, but PSA premiums are larger for resale.

For 1st Edition cards, BGS and CGC also carry significant premiums on high grades, but PSA remains the resale king.

Building a Base Set collection priorities:

1. A holo Base Set Charizard in any reasonable PSA grade as the foundation.
2. A Shadowless Base Set holo to anchor the print variant collection.
3. A 1st Edition Base Set holo of any Pokémon if budget allows — the iconic card.
4. Multiple Base Set holos in PSA 8+ to round out the collection.
